Dog-Friendly Beaches to Explore in the South Hams

The South Hams coastline is one of Devon’s greatest treasures, offering miles of sandy bays, pebbled coves, dramatic cliffs and peaceful walking routes. It’s also exceptionally welcoming to four-legged guests, making it an ideal destination for dog-friendly holidays.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet coastal stroll, a wide-open beach for dogs to run freely, or a scenic spot for rock pooling and paddling, there are plenty of excellent choices close to Thurlestone Hotel.


Beaches Where Dogs Are Welcome All Year

Hallsands

A quiet, historic village overlooking Start Bay. Its pebbled beach is peaceful, scenic and fully dog-friendly year-round.

Beesands

Two miles of shingle beach with views to Start Point, a village pub, and fresh seafood sold locally. Dogs are allowed at all times.

Slapton Sands, Torcross & Strete Gate

A long, beautiful stretch of pebbled beach with fascinating WWII history and access to Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Dogs are welcome throughout the year.

Thurlestone & South Milton Sands

A family favourite with fine shingle, sand and striking views of Thurlestone Rock. Dogs can enjoy this beach all year, along with smaller nearby bays such as Broadsands, Yarmer and Leasfoot.

Hope Cove

Inner and Outer Hope both welcome dogs year-round (on leads). A charming spot with sheltered coves and village amenities.

Soar Mill Cove

A small, secluded sandy cove reached via a gentle walk. Peaceful and ideal for dogs.

North Sands, Salcombe

A popular sandy beach with amenities and plenty of space for dogs to enjoy the water.

East Portlemouth

Opposite Salcombe, home to sandy beaches like Mill Bay and Sunny Cove. All are dog-friendly all year.

Gara Rock

A stunning, unspoilt sandy bay accessed via the coastal path — perfect for adventurous walkers and dogs.

East Prawle

Rugged coastline, rock pools, hidden coves and excellent walking. All beaches in this area welcome dogs year-round.

Lannacombe

A quiet pale-sand beach with great rock pooling. Dogs are welcome at all times.

Start Point & Mattiscombe Beach

Magnificent views and a sheltered sandy beach reached via a coastal path. Fully dog-friendly.


Beaches With Seasonal Dog Restrictions

Bantham

Dogs are not permitted on the main beach from 1 May to 30 September, but there are dog-friendly areas to the north all year round.

Bigbury-on-Sea

Some areas have restrictions in summer, but dogs are allowed year-round west of the causeway and at the far east of Sedgewell Cove.

South Sands

No dogs allowed from 1 May to 30 September.

Mouthwell Beach, Hope Cove

No dogs allowed from 1 May to 30 September.

Blackpool Sands

No dogs permitted from Easter to 31 October.
